Facial Rejuvenation/Facelift
The facial rejuvenation procedures are the general name given to a series of surgical and non-surgical procedures aimed at eliminating the facial scars due to the aging. These include face and neck lifting surgeries, eyelid surgeries, eyebrow and face lifts, botox and filler applications, laser and chemical peeling procedures. The patient and the doctor decide together which surgery or procedure will be required for the patient. It is important for the patients who want the facial rejuvenation to bring their youth photos with them in order to determine the procedures to be done correctly.
Frequently asked questions related to the facial rejuvenation procedures:
What happens on the face during the aging?
Three fundamental changes occur in the face during the aging:
-The tissues hang down due to the gravity. This effect is more pronounced in the thick skin. The eyebrows, upper eyelids, cheeks and neck are the structures most affected by the gravity. As we age, our eyebrows and upper lids pile down, cheeks hang down, and the lines from the nose to the lips deepen. The stacks begin at the edge of the jawbone, the neck skin relaxes and the jowl becomes more pronounced.
-The facial soft tissue loss occurs. Due to the loss of the subcutaneous tissue, the skin becomes thinner, the cheeks lose their fullness, the eyes go into the hollow, the under-eye bags become evident, and the mid-face area becomes flattened. While the midface loses its fullness, the facial skin is piled on the chin edges. The face, which is oval when young, becomes round over time and then takes a rectangular shape.
-The skin aging begins. The skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity. Especially due to the sun, the spots on the face and skin lesions that can turn into the cancer in the future occur. The mimic lines are formed by the effect of the mimic muscles. They mostly appear in the form of crow's feet around the eyes, vertical lines between the eyebrows due to frown, and horizontal lines on the forehead due to raising the eyebrows. The thin skinned people have more wrinkles.
Is it possible to delay the facial aging?
Perhaps, the most important factor determining the aging is genetics. A person having a good genetic structure ages late even if the environmental conditions are bad. Apart from this, the racial characteristics are important. While the sagging due to the gravity is observed more in the Mediterranean race with the thick skin, the wrinkles are more prominent in the thin-skinned blond Northern Europeans.
The factors that we can control about aging are as follows: sleeping regularly, eating well, staying away from the sun, consuming plenty of fluids, not smoking, not consuming too much alcohol, avoiding tension and sadness, living in a clean environment, avoiding too much make-up, moisturizing regularly and using the skin care products.
What are the facial rejuvenation surgeries?
What are the facial rejuvenation surgeries?
We divide the facial rejuvenation surgeries into three:
-Upper face rejuvenation: The forehead, temples, eyebrows and upper eyelids. In this region, mostly lifting operations are performed for the sagging caused by the gravity. These include endoscopic and open forehead lift procedures, temple lift, eyebrow lift, eyebrow suspensions, upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty) and botox applications.
-Mid-face rejuvenation: The lower eyelids, cheeks and cheekbones. The purpose in this area is to correct the deteriorated lower eyelid-cheek relationship, to move the drooping cheek up and to replace the soft tissue loss. These procedures include lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty), endoscopic midface lift, lower lid mid-face lift, mid-face straps, fat injections and fillers.
-Lower face and neck lifting: The chin edges, lower lips and neck. The purpose in this area is to lift the sagging face up with the effect of gravity, to correct the jowls formed on the jawbone, to remove excess fat in the neck and to stretch the neck. These procedures include the face and neck lifting surgeries and longitudinal liposuction.
What kind of procedures can be performed other than the surgery for the purpose of facial rejuvenation?
The non-surgical rejuvenation procedures include the suspension procedures, skin peeling, botox, and filler applications.
The eyebrows, mid-face area and neck can be suspended with the straps made with the closed method and special stitches. They are effective on the mild sagging and their effects are temporary. However, it is an appropriate method for the patients who are thought to be early for the surgery and for the patients who do not want the surgery. They are applied under the local anesthesia and the postoperative recovery period is very short.
The purpose of the skin peeling processes is to remove the stained, damaged and wrinkled upper layer of the skin and replace it with a new and fresh skin. This process is performed either by the mechanical sanding of the skin (dermabrasion) or by the peeling by burning with the various acids (chemical peeling) or by peeling with the help of the laser beams. The lasers and other light treatments not only exfoliate the skin, but also stimulate the production of subcutaneous collagen, thereby thickening and rejuvenating the skin.
The purpose in the botox applications is to deactivate the mimic muscles, to prevent the formation of mimic lines and to delay their deepening. The botox is mostly applied around the eyes. It is very effective in the crow's feet around the eyes, vertical lines between the eyebrows and horizontal lines on the forehead.
The various fillers are used in filling the deep wrinkles on the face, replacing the volume loss in the middle face, clarifying the facial contours, and plumping the lips. While the adipose tissue taken from the patient is preferred in large areas, the ready-made fillers are applied for the smaller areas. Among them, the most commonly used substance called hyaluronic acid is found in the connective tissue between cells in the body.
