Brachioplasty
The sagging on the back and inside of the upper arm usually occurs with the adipose accumulations and skin sagging. Because, the skin and subcutaneous tissue in this region are looser, generally, the factors such as familial predisposition, aging, weight gain and loss, exposure to the sun, and gravity cause sagging by further increasing the relaxation in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The medical aesthetic and aesthetic surgery bring many solutions to the arm sagging. However, the only solution for the severe sagging is surgery. When the arms are lifted to the side, a bat wing-shaped sagging occurs on the upper part of the arm. This situation creates a problem in wearing the short-sleeved dresses. The problems in the arm sagging vary from patient to patient. Sometimes the quality of the skin has deteriorated and regional lubrication has increased, while those with rapid weight loss only have sagging. If the skin quality is good in the heavy sagging, only liposuction (adipose removal) is sufficient. If the skin quality is deteriorated and there are cracks, the brachioplasty surgery is required. In some patients, both the liposuction and arm lift can be combined. The liposuction or brachioplasty can also be performed for the lymphedema occurring in the arm on the same side in the patients whose breasts were removed due to the breast cancer and whose armpit was intervened.
The way to prevent arm sagging can remove the adipose tissue that will cause sagging without occurring deformations in the skin with the liposuction in the early stages. Because the skin collects itself and eliminates the problem; however, if there is only excess skin on the arm, excess skin tissue, and if there is excess adipose, the excess skin and adipose tissue should be removed. The most important disadvantage is the straight line scar on the back-inner part of the arm after the brachioplasty surgery. Since the scar will appear when the arm is lifted, it is best for the patient to make a decision consciously of this trace.
How is the Brachioplasty Surgery Performed?
The brachioplasty surgery, which is applied in the arm sagging, is usually performed under the general anesthesia and sometimes under the local anesthesia. It takes between 1-3 hours on average. In very severe sagging and lipoidosis, the patient can stay in the hospital for one day. The sagging on the arm is two-dimensional, both transversely and longitudinally across the skin. For this reason, the skin should be cut both transversely and longitudinally and the sagging skin should be removed. It is easy to hide its trace as the transverse skin excess will be removed by the incisions made in the axillary fossa. The longitudinal skin excess is removed with longitudinal incisions, where the remaining scar is visible.
What Happens After the Brachioplasty Surgery?
The rubber pipe drains can be placed in this area to prevent the postoperative bleeding and fluid accumulation. These are withdrawn after 2-3 days at the most. It is recommended to keep the arms elevated, especially in the first days after the surgery. A pressure bandage is applied to reduce swelling, edema and bleeding that will be able to occur in the surgical field. After three days, an elastic bandage in the form of a sock is applied to the arm to shape it. Usually there are no stitches to be removed.
There is no or almost no pain in the postoperative period. If there is pain, the painkillers are sufficient. To return to the normal life is within a few days. You can only do your daily work for the first two weeks, you can start sports such as jogging in the third week, where you do not use your arms, and you can start exerting sports such as tennis after the eighth week. The scar on the inside of your arm will be red at first, but will become thinner and less obvious over time.
Is There Any Trace of the Brachioplasty Surgery?
It is easy to hide its trace as the transverse skin excess will be removed by the incisions made in the axillary fossa. The longitudinal skin excess is removed with the longitudinal incisions, where the remaining scar is visible. The scar inside your arm will be red at first, but will become thinner and less obvious over time.
